WHAT IS IT?
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a screening tool designed to set a baseline of movement standards. Individuals are tested in various movement patterns that will help our coaches identify movement pattern limitations or asymmetries. The movements are all scored, and this information is then used to design an individualized exercise program.
WHY WE USE IT
The FMS sets a baseline for movement. In a perfect world all athletes would be able to move through these ranges of motion with ease. Obviously this is not always the case. The FMS can uncover limited movement and asymmetries, that would normally takes weeks or months of observing athletes to discover, in as little as 12 minutes. If an athlete is training these limited movement patters the chance of injury is increased. By screening athletes before participating in training we can identify and address these areas before the potential injury occurs. This helps us set realistic goals, reduce the incidence of injury, and start increasing athletic performance.
HOW WE USE IT
The score an athlete receives is the baseline for movement. Our coaches then design a specific program based on the FMS results to insure that any movement deficiencies or asymmetries are addressed. Movements can then be periodically retested to gauge progress. This process is the most efficient way that we can restore proper movement and build functional strength that will directly translate to the field, court, ice etc.
